Port Wine

9 official colors

The rules of Port set out a scale of nine color classes: five for reds, from the deep «retinto» of a Vintage to the «alourado claro» of a light tawny, one for rosé and three for whites.

Port is a fortified wine from the Douro: its rules allow wine spirit (aguardente) to be added, and it must have between 19 and 22 % alcohol, except the light dry white, from 16.5 %. Its sweetness goes from extra-dry to «lágrima», over 130 g/L of sugar. The nine color classes are quoted from the DO Porto specification registered in the EU; the exact tones are approximations.
