Simultaneous Contrast
A colour changes depending on what is next to it. Not metaphorically — the same pigment, the same hex value, read as two different colours by the same eye in the same second.
Where the word comes from
The discovery came out of a complaint. Michel Eugène Chevreul, a chemist, was made director of dyeing at the Gobelins tapestry works and had to deal with customers insisting that certain blacks were weak. He tested the dyes and found them correct. The fault was optical: the blacks looked weak because of the colours woven beside them. He published the law of simultaneous contrast in 1839, and it left the textile trade almost immediately for the studios.
In the studio
It is the mechanism behind coloured shadows — a shadow on snow really does look blue next to warm sunlight — and it underwrites Impressionist practice generally. Cézanne built form out of it, laying patches whose apparent colour depends on their neighbours, so that a plane advances or recedes with no modelling at all. Rothko's late canvases are almost pure demonstrations: rectangles whose colour visibly changes along the edge where they meet.
Why it matters
It means no colour has a fixed appearance, and therefore no colour can be judged alone. A palette approved as swatches on white will not behave as an interface, a paint chosen on a palette will not behave on the canvas, and a fabric picked in a shop will not behave in a room. Everything must be tested in the company it will keep.
Today
The digital version is easy to reproduce: put a neutral grey on an orange field and it turns faintly blue. This is the flaw in treating design tokens as ground truth — the token guarantees the value, not the appearance, and a system that never checks colours in context will keep shipping combinations that measure correctly and look wrong.
